The Violet-eared Waxbill is a strikingly beautiful finch found in the dry savannas and scrublands of Southern Africa. Males feature brilliant violet ear coverts, a blue rump, and a red bill.
Where to spot
Widespread in arid and semi-arid savannas and thornscrub of Southern Africa, including Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. Often found near water sources.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on seeds on the ground or in low bushes. The male's iridescent violet ear patches are the most prominent and beautiful identification feature.

Year-round. Easily observed, especially at waterholes in the early morning or late afternoon.
