The Variegated Tanager is a striking species with a complex pattern of black spots and streaks over a yellow and green body. It prefers humid lowland forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits the canopy and subcanopy of humid lowland forests in the Amazon basin.
How to spot
Scan the upper levels of the forest. Patience is required due to its often high foraging, but its unique variegation is unmistakable once seen.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning when foraging for fruit and insects.
Its intricate plumage pattern provides excellent camouflage amidst the dappled light and shadows of the dense forest canopy.
