Where to spot
Endemic to the inter-Andean valleys of central Peru, preferring shrubby areas, agricultural zones, and edges of Polylepis woodlands, typically from 2,000 to 3,500 meters.
How to spot
Look for its bright rufous back and unique head pattern. It forages mostly on the ground or in low shrubs. Listen for its distinctive, somewhat buzzy song to locate individuals.

Can be observed year-round; it is generally more vocal and active during the austral spring and summer breeding season.
