The Varied Thrush is a handsome North American thrush known for its striking orange-brown and slate-grey plumage, accented by a bold black breast band. It has a distinctive, ethereal song.
Where to spot
Pacific Northwest of North America, breeding in dense coniferous and mixed forests from Alaska to California. Winters in milder coastal areas and further south.
How to spot
Look on the forest floor near dense undergrowth. During winter, they may visit suburban yards. Listen for its haunting, sustained single whistle, often repeated at different pitches.
When to spot
Year-round resident in much of its Pacific Northwest range. Migratory populations are best seen during spring and fall migration. Active dawn and dusk.
