Where to spot
Found across mountainous and rugged landscapes, open country, and sometimes woodlands in North America, Eurasia, and parts of North Africa. Look for them soaring over high peaks, open moorlands, and vast plains.
How to spot
Identify adults by their large size, dark brown plumage with a golden-brown wash on the nape and hindneck. In flight, their broad, long wings are held in a slight 'V' or dihedral, and the tail is relatively long. Watch for them soaring effortlessly on thermals or perched on high vantage points.
When to spot
Golden Eagles are largely resident year-round across much of their range, though some northern populations may undertake short-distance migrations. They are most active during daylight hours, especially mid-morning to late afternoon.
