The Red-crowned Ant-Tanager is a robust, mostly reddish-brown bird found in the understory of tropical forests. Males have a bright red crown and throat, giving them a distinctive appearance.
Where to spot
Found from southeastern Mexico south through Central America to northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil). Inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests.
How to spot
Search in the dense understory and mid-story of humid forests. They are often shy but can be located by their distinctive, somewhat harsh calls. Look for them near army ant swarms if present.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round in its range. Active throughout the day, but particularly so in the morning.
