This brilliant hummingbird is characterized by its jewel-toned plumage, particularly the male's iridescent gorget that shifts between greens, purples, and blues. It inhabits the lush cloud forests of the Andes.
Where to spot
Subtropical and temperate humid montane forests, forest edges, and clearings of the central Andes, from Colombia to northern Ecuador. Elevational range typically 2,000-3,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for them visiting flowers along forest edges or at hummingbird feeders within their range. They can be quite bold and allow close approaches, offering great photo opportunities.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active when feeding on nectar, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.
