The Rufous-crested Coquette is a petite, iridescent hummingbird found across parts of Central and South America. Males are distinguished by their bright rufous crest and green throat patch.
Where to spot
Distributed from Costa Rica south through Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador. Inhabits forest edges, clearings, coffee plantations, and gardens, from foothills to highlands.
How to spot
Scan for small, fast-moving birds around flowering plants. The male's vivid rufous crest and short, straight bill are key identification points.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, particularly mornings and late afternoons. Can be observed year-round within its range, especially when flowering plants are abundant.
