Spotted
A large, highly active hummingbird, the White-vented Violetear is characterized by its iridescent green plumage and prominent violet patches behind its eyes. It is a common and conspicuous bird of open habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread in open and semi-open habitats across eastern and central South America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Found in gardens, parks, savannas, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for it at flowering trees and shrubs, often in suburban areas or at feeders. Its large size, green plumage, and distinctive violet ear patches make it relatively easy to identify. Listen for its loud, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round. Highly active throughout the day, particularly during peak flowering seasons. Early mornings are excellent for observing territorial displays.

Unlike many hummingbirds that are shy, White-vented Violetears are often bold and aggressive, frequently seen defending their feeding territories from other hummingbirds and even larger birds.
