The Torrent-lark is a striking black and white bird endemic to New Guinea. It is a highly specialized species, found exclusively along fast-flowing rivers and streams.

Endemic to New Guinea, found along rocky, fast-flowing rivers and streams in lowland and hill forests.
How to spot
Focus on rocky riverbanks and exposed stream beds in forested areas. Look for its distinctive black and white plumage and its foraging behavior near water. Listen for its sharp, distinctive calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging activity is highest along the water's edge.
This species has adapted to forage for insects among rocks and gravel in fast-moving water, a unique niche among the Monarchidae family.
