Spotted
The Speckled Berrypecker is a small, unique bird from the mountains of New Guinea, characterized by its distinctive speckled plumage and short, stout bill. It primarily feeds on berries and small fruits found in the forest canopy.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of New Guinea, typically found at higher elevations (above 1,200m). It inhabits the canopy and sub-canopy layers of cloud forests.
How to spot
Look for its speckled plumage and short bill. Scan fruiting trees in the montane forest canopy. Listen for its calls, which can be soft and high-pitched. It can be elusive in dense foliage.
When to spot
Active year-round in its tropical montane habitat. Best observed during early mornings when birds are actively foraging on fruiting trees.

Despite their name, berrypeckers are not closely related to true berrypeckers (Melanocharitidae) but are instead part of a small, distinct family endemic to New Guinea.
