The Greater Cuckoo-Dove is a large, long-tailed pigeon native to the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is characterized by its relatively dull plumage and robust build compared to other cuckoo-doves, adapting to a range of forest types.
Where to spot
Found across the Lesser Sunda Islands, from Lombok eastwards to Timor and the Tanimbar Islands. Inhabits various forest types, including monsoon forest, eucalyptus woodlands, and cultivated areas with scattered trees, often at lower elevations.
How to spot
Look for its large size, very long tail, and drab brown plumage with a slight greenish sheen on the hindneck. Its call is a deep, often mournful 'coo-coo-coo,' similar to other cuckoo-doves but often heavier and more resonant.
When to spot
Most active during the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late afternoon, when it can be seen foraging or perching conspicuously. Calls are more frequent at these times.
