Endemic to the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent high mountain ranges in China, India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Found in alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and arid plains at very high elevations.
How to spot
Look for its robust size and grey head/chest. Often seen foraging on the ground in open, desolate landscapes, sometimes in small flocks. Its calls are distinctive.

Year-round resident. Best observed during spring and summer when it is more active and approachable in its breeding grounds.
