Montane forests and cultivated areas near streams and rivers throughout Taiwan.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, melodious, whistling calls. Look for it perching on rocks in streams or on bridges overlooking water.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal in the early morning and late afternoon.
This species is Taiwan's national bird, revered for its beautiful song and often seen near human habitations where streams are present.
