Spotted
The Taiwan Cupwing is a small, secretive bird endemic to the island of Taiwan. It inhabits dense undergrowth in montane forests, where its presence is usually revealed by its distinctive song.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, and mossy areas within montane forests throughout Taiwan.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic high-pitched, often repeated song. It is extremely shy and stays hidden in dense cover, so patience and good hearing are essential for observation.
When to spot
Year-round, resident species. Most vocal during the breeding season (spring/summer) and early mornings.
This species was once considered a subspecies of the Scaly-breasted Cupwing, but genetic studies confirmed its distinctiveness as an endemic species of Taiwan.
