Rothschild's Grosbeak is a robust and distinctive species, characterized by its deep blue plumage in males and warm brown in females. It is a localized resident of the Andean foothills.
Where to spot
Found in humid foothill and lower montane forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Look in the mid-story and sub-canopy of humid forests, often near streams or ravines. They can be elusive but may join mixed-species flocks. Listen for their distinctive, often loud songs.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. Best observed in the mornings.
This species is often found near water sources in its humid forest habitat, using its strong bill to crush seeds and also consuming insects.
