Spotted
The Sunda Flameback is a visually appealing woodpecker species, easily identified by its golden-yellow to crimson back and dark underparts. It is a common resident across its range, often frequenting cultivated areas as well as forests.
Where to spot
Widespread across Southeast Asia, including the Greater Sunda Islands (Sumatra, Java, Borneo) and the Malay Peninsula, inhabiting various forest types and disturbed habitats.
How to spot
Scan tree trunks and branches for its distinctive golden or reddish back and dark, often scaled, belly. Listen for its loud, rapid drumming and sharp 'chip' calls while it climbs.
When to spot
Active during daylight, typically from dawn to dusk. It can be observed throughout the year in its non-migratory territories.
The Sunda Flameback often forages on large dead trees and fallen logs, using its strong bill to excavate for wood-boring beetle larvae, a key part of its diet.
