Widespread across Southeast Asia, including the Greater Sunda Islands (Sumatra, Java, Borneo) and the Malay Peninsula, inhabiting various forest types and disturbed habitats.
How to spot
Scan tree trunks and branches for its distinctive golden or reddish back and dark, often scaled, belly. Listen for its loud, rapid drumming and sharp 'chip' calls while it climbs.
When to spot
Active during daylight, typically from dawn to dusk. It can be observed throughout the year in its non-migratory territories.
