Spotted
The Rufous-tailed Coucal is a distinctive species endemic to the Philippines, easily identified by its contrasting rufous-chestnut tail set against an otherwise dark, glossy black body. It is a shy bird of dense habitats.
Where to spot
Found in dense scrub, tall grasslands, secondary growth, and forest edges across various islands of the Philippines, typically in areas with good cover.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, resonant calls that can carry through dense foliage. Look for its dark body and bright rufous tail as it moves cautiously through thick undergrowth, often near the ground.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but more often heard than seen. Its calls are most frequent in the early morning or late afternoon, and during the breeding season.
