The Sulawesi Masked Owl is a large species of barn owl endemic to Sulawesi and some smaller nearby islands in Indonesia. It is a powerful nocturnal predator of forests and disturbed habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to Sulawesi and some nearby islands (Peleng, Togian, Sula), Indonesia. Inhabits primary and secondary forests, forest edges, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, hissing screech. Look for its large size, pale plumage, and heart-shaped facial disc. Can sometimes be found by scanning large fig trees or dense foliage where they might roost during the day.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn.
