Spotted
The Oriental Bay Owl is a unique and somewhat mysterious owl found across Southeast Asia. Unlike true owls, it has a distinctive heart-shaped facial disc, similar to barn owls, but with a more compressed appearance.
Where to spot
Southeast Asia, from Nepal and India east to southern China, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. Inhabits dense forests, woodlands, and plantations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive hooting calls, which can sound mournful or mechanical. Look for its unique facial disc, which is more 'compressed' or U-shaped than a typical Barn Owl, and its deep reddish-brown plumage. Very secretive and hard to spot.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn.
