Found in the mountainous regions of mainland Southeast Asia, including parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Inhabits dense undergrowth of montane evergreen and mixed forests, often in bamboo thickets.

Listen for its loud, varied calls, which are an excellent indicator of its presence. Look for movement in dense shrubs and bamboo. The prominent white streaking on its head and back is its most distinguishing feature.
