Spotted
The White-spotted Forest Rail is a striking but highly secretive bird inhabiting the montane forests of New Guinea. Its camouflaged plumage and shy nature make it a challenge to observe.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth and forest floor of montane rainforests in New Guinea.
How to spot
Extremely quiet movement and patience in appropriate forest habitats. Listen for any soft calls or movements in the undergrowth.
When to spot
Difficult to pinpoint. Most sightings are opportunistic. Focus on periods of general forest bird activity.
Its white-spotted plumage provides excellent camouflage amongst the dappled light and leaf litter of the forest floor, making it nearly invisible when motionless.
