Spotted
The Rufous-capped Thornbill is a small, high-altitude hummingbird easily recognized by its distinctive rufous cap. It belongs to the 'thornbill' genus, characterized by their relatively short, straight bills. This species is often seen foraging amidst dense montane vegetation.
Where to spot
Typically found in the high Andes of South America, specifically in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and scrubland at elevations generally between 2,000 and 3,700 meters (6,500-12,100 feet).
How to spot
Look for its small size and the prominent rufous-brown cap that contrasts with its otherwise dull greenish body. Observe it darting among flowering bushes and trees, often low to the ground. Its short bill helps distinguish it from other hummingbirds; watch for rapid wing beats and brief perches.
When to spot
Best observed year-round during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. Activity may decrease during heavy rain or exceptionally cold periods.

Despite its small size, the Rufous-capped Thornbill can tolerate cold, high-altitude environments, utilizing torpor (a state of reduced metabolic activity) to conserve energy during chilly nights.
