Spotted
The Star-bellied Antwren is a distinctive species known for its unique plumage patterns and its preference for mid-story to canopy foraging. It's a relatively large and stout antwren compared to its smaller relatives.
Where to spot
Widely distributed in the Amazon rainforests of South America, across Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-canopy and sub-canopy layers of tall, humid forests, particularly near mixed-species flocks. Its loud, whistled calls can often reveal its presence before you see it.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during the active foraging periods of the morning and late afternoon.
Unlike many smaller antwrens that stick to the undergrowth, the Star-bellied Antwren frequently forages higher in the forest canopy, often joining mixed-species flocks in search of insects.
