Spotted
The Sri Lanka Magpie-Robin is a distinctive bird endemic to Sri Lanka, known for its contrasting black and white plumage. It is a common and familiar sight in various habitats across the island.
Where to spot
Endemic to Sri Lanka, found widely across the island from lowlands to mid-hills. It inhabits gardens, cultivated areas, scrubland, and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for its bold black and white coloration and its habit of foraging on the ground or perching conspicuously. Listen for its melodic and varied song, often heard in the early morning and late afternoon.
When to spot
A resident species, observable year-round. It is particularly vocal during the breeding season, which peaks during the inter-monsoon periods (March-May and August-October).
This species was recently split from the Oriental Magpie-Robin, with research showing it to be genetically and morphologically distinct, highlighting the rich biodiversity of island ecosystems.
