Spotted
An endemic gamebird of Sri Lanka, known for its secretive nature and distinctive plumage. Males possess prominent leg spurs, typically two on each leg.
Where to spot
Endemic to Sri Lanka, found in dense undergrowth of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, often near streams or damp areas.
How to spot
Listen intently for its characteristic cackling call, especially in the early morning. Be patient and quiet in dense forest patches; quick glimpses are often the best you can hope for.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk. Its loud, distinctive call is frequently heard at these times.
The Sri Lanka Spurfowl is very difficult to observe in the wild due to its shy habits and preference for dense undergrowth, making its calls often the primary means of detection.
