Spotted
The Spotted Wood Quail (Odontophorus guttatus) is recognized by its prominent white spots on its blackish underparts and a rufous crown. It inhabits humid montane forests of Central America and northern South America.
Where to spot
Found from southern Mexico south through Central America to northern Colombia. Typically in humid evergreen and montane cloud forests.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, resonant calls, which are often heard before the bird is seen. Observing them requires patience, as they are secretive and prefer dense cover, foraging on the forest floor.
When to spot
Active and vocal mostly at dawn and dusk, which are the best times for observation. It is a resident species, present year-round.

Its striking white spots are particularly noticeable on its dark belly and chest, giving it a distinctive 'spotted' appearance that makes it relatively easy to identify among wood quails.
