The Spinifex Pigeon is a small, striking ground-dwelling pigeon uniquely adapted to the arid and semi-arid spinifex grasslands of Australia. It is characterized by its reddish-brown plumage and upright crest.
Where to spot
Found throughout the arid and semi-arid interior of Australia, predominantly inhabiting spinifex grasslands, rocky outcrops, and sparse woodlands, always in close proximity to water sources.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive upright crest, reddish-brown body, and unique face pattern with a white line bordering the eye. They typically walk with a low, crouching posture. When flushed, they often fly a short distance before landing quickly and running for cover.
When to spot
Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when they gather at waterholes to drink. During the heat of the day, they seek shelter in dense spinifex or rocky crevices.
