Spotted
The Dot-winged Crake (Laterallus notatus) is a small, secretive rail found in parts of South America. It is characterized by its dark, finely spotted plumage and often inhabits dense, wet grasslands.
Where to spot
Found in scattered populations across South America, including parts of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Inhabits dense marshy grasslands, wet savannas, and shrubby areas near water.
How to spot
Very challenging to observe visually. Focus on listening for its soft, repetitive calls emanating from dense, wet thickets. Patience and quiet are essential, as it rarely emerges into open view.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active at dawn and dusk, and generally remains hidden during the day.
This crake is highly elusive, often remaining hidden deep within thick vegetation, making its distinctive calls a primary way to confirm its presence in a given area.
