Spotted
The South American Snipe is a widespread and common wader across much of South America, known for its cryptic brown plumage. It is typically found in various freshwater wetland habitats.
Where to spot
Found throughout most of South America, from Colombia and Venezuela south to Tierra del Fuego, inhabiting marshes, wet grasslands, bogs, and flooded fields.
How to spot
Look for it in open, muddy or wet areas, often solitary or in small groups. Remain still and scan carefully, as its excellent camouflage makes it difficult to detect unless it moves.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its resident areas. Display flights and drumming sounds are most prominent during the local breeding season.

Like many snipes, it possesses eyes set far back on its head, providing an exceptionally wide field of vision to detect predators while its long bill is immersed in the mud, probing for food.
