The Sanderling is a familiar and highly active small shorebird, easily recognized by its pale plumage and characteristic 'run-and-stop' feeding behavior along wave-washed beaches. They are one of the palest sandpipers.
Where to spot
Breeds in the high Arctic tundra circumpolarly. During non-breeding seasons, they are found worldwide on sandy beaches, estuaries, and mudflats along most coastlines.
How to spot
Look for their pale, almost white appearance, especially in non-breeding plumage. Observe their distinctive feeding behavior: running back and forth with the waves, probing rapidly for food. They often feed in small, loose flocks.
When to spot
Commonly seen during migration (spring and autumn) and throughout the non-breeding season from late summer to spring along coastal areas.
