The Sooty Antbird is a dark, rather uniformly colored antbird, with males being almost entirely sooty-grey and females a slightly browner shade. It is a denizen of dense forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Inhabits the understory of humid montane and foothill forests in the northern Andes, from Colombia to northern Peru.
How to spot
Search in dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets. Listen for their distinctive, often melancholy calls. They can be quite difficult to observe due to their dark plumage and preferred habitat.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon, and especially during the non-breeding season when they might be less skulking.
