Spotted
A small, pale lark with fine streaking on its upperparts, well-camouflaged for its dry, arid habitats. It has a relatively short, stout bill characteristic of short-toed larks.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid grasslands, open scrubland, and stony plains in the Horn of Africa, particularly Somalia and parts of Ethiopia and Kenya.
How to spot
Scan open, dry ground for movement. It tends to be shy and easily overlooked. Listen for its high-pitched, often repeated calls, which can aid in detection.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal and active during the breeding season, which often follows local rains.
This lark species is largely endemic to the Horn of Africa, specializing in the unique dryland ecosystems of the region, where it often blends perfectly with the sparse vegetation.
