Spotted
The Slaty-breasted Wood-rail is a large, secretive rail found in the Atlantic Forest region of eastern South America. It is characterized by its dark slaty-grey breast, contrasting with a blackish head, rufous flanks, and a bright yellow-green bill. This highly vocal species is a distinctive sound of its forest habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Inhabits dense humid forests, particularly near streams, swamps, and wet areas.
How to spot
Look for its large size, dark slaty-grey breast, and bright yellow-green bill. It is highly elusive and best detected by its loud, resonant calls, which are a series of cackles, grunts, and whistles, often accelerating into a crescendo, and are very distinctive.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active at dawn and dusk, when it is most vocal.

This wood-rail is often heard giving its loud, peculiar calls from deep within dense forest undergrowth, leading it to be known as the 'saracura' in its native range, mimicking its calls.
