Spotted
The Short-tailed Weaver is a distinctive and somewhat aberrant weaver species found in central Africa, characterized by its unusually short tail. It prefers forest edge and swampy clearings.
Where to spot
Endemic to a relatively small range in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and western Uganda, primarily in humid montane forests and their clearings.
How to spot
Search in forest clearings, swampy areas, and along forest edges. Its short tail and dark plumage should help in identification, though it can be shy.
When to spot
Present year-round in its habitat. Early mornings are often best for observing bird activity.
Its short tail and robust bill give it a unique appearance among weavers, leading to its placement in its own genus, Brachycope.
