Spotted
Nicol's Weaver, also known as the Usambara Weaver, is a rare and elusive species found in the montane forests of Tanzania. Its dark plumage helps it blend into its shadowy forest habitat.
Where to spot
Strictly confined to a few relict patches of montane forest, primarily in the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania.
How to spot
Searching for this shy forest dweller requires deep forest penetration and considerable patience. Listen for its quiet calls and look for movement within the forest understory and mid-canopy.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its restricted habitat. Early mornings or late afternoons may offer better visibility when birds are more active.
It is one of the most poorly known weaver species, making it a highly sought-after bird for twitchers visiting its limited range.
