Endemic to the Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira mountain ranges in southeastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, São Paulo).
How to spot
Search in high-altitude campos rupestres (rocky fields) and montane scrub. It can be elusive, so patience and careful scanning of the rocky terrain are needed. Listen for its unique calls.

Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when active.
