Where to spot
Large, undisturbed rivers and wetlands in the foothills of the Himalayas (Bhutan, Northeast India) and parts of Southeast Asia (Myanmar, China). Extremely rare.
How to spot
Requires immense patience and luck. Look for its very large size, dark grey back, and contrasting white belly. Often detected by its deep, guttural calls.
When to spot
Year-round in its limited range. Best chance for observation is during the dry season (October-April) when rivers are low.
