Schlegel's Asity is a striking passerine bird endemic to Madagascar, males exhibiting brilliant yellow, black, and iridescent blue-green plumage with distinctive blue-green facial wattles.
Where to spot
Humid rainforests, particularly mid-altitude and montane forests, in western and northern Madagascar.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on fruits in the forest understory and mid-story. Listen for its calls, which are relatively quiet. Patience is needed, especially to observe the males' colorful wattles.
When to spot
Year-round. Males are most colorful during the breeding season. Active during the day.
Schlegel's Asity is named after Hermann Schlegel, a German ornithologist. It is known for its remarkable sexual dimorphism, with females being duller.
