The Scarlet-rumped Cacique is a striking species with glossy black plumage, a vibrant scarlet rump, and distinctive pale yellow eyes. It is a common colonial nester in humid tropical lowlands.
Where to spot
Found in Central and South America, from Honduras south through Colombia and Ecuador to Bolivia. Inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests, forest edges, and clearings.
How to spot
Look for the glossy black plumage with the unmistakable bright scarlet rump and pale yellow eyes. Listen for its varied vocalizations, including whistles, gurgles, and screeches, often from a colony.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most easily observed during the breeding season when they congregate in vocal nesting colonies.
