Humid montane forests, cloud forests, and adjacent cultivated areas in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
How to spot
Look for them flying rapidly in flocks, often high overhead, making loud screeching calls. Scan the upper canopy of large trees where they feed. The extensive red on the head is a key feature.

Year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon.
