Spotted
Also known as the Cottontop or Blue Quail, the Scaled Quail is a distinctive desert quail recognizable by its scaly-looking plumage and white crest. It is a highly social bird, often seen in large coveys.
Where to spot
Found in arid and semi-arid regions of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, primarily inhabiting grasslands, deserts, and scrublands.
How to spot
Look for coveys foraging in open areas or running across roads. They prefer to run rather than fly when disturbed. Their distinctive 'chi-ca-go' call can help locate them.
When to spot
Year-round residents. They are most active during the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late afternoon, especially during the non-breeding season when coveys are large.

Scaled Quail get their 'scaly' appearance from the dark edges on their breast and belly feathers. When startled, they prefer to run swiftly rather than fly, often dodging through vegetation.
