The Black-bellied Myzomela is a small honeyeater endemic to Vanuatu. Males are characterized by a brilliant red head and back, contrasting with a black belly.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Vanuatu, including Espíritu Santo, Malakula, and Efate. It inhabits lowland and hill forests, forest edges, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Males are identifiable by their brilliant red head, nape, and back, with contrasting black wings, tail, and belly. Females are duller. Look for them actively feeding in flowering trees and shrubs. Listen for high-pitched, sharp calls.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, feeding primarily on nectar and small insects. As a resident species, it can be observed year-round within its island habitats.
