The Red-throated Myzomela is a vibrant, small honeyeater found in New Guinea and surrounding islands. Males feature a striking red throat that contrasts sharply with their dark bodies.
Where to spot
Widespread in New Guinea (both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea), the Bismarck Archipelago, and parts of the Solomon Islands. It inhabits forests, forest edges, and gardens from lowlands to mid-mountains.
How to spot
Males are easily identified by their blackish body and brilliant red throat. Females are duller, mostly olive-brown. Look for them actively moving through the canopy of flowering trees. Listen for their high-pitched, buzzing, or tinkling calls.
When to spot
Active during the day, feeding primarily on nectar, but also insects and small fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round in suitable flowering habitats.
