Spotted
The Brush Cuckoo is a widespread and often vocal cuckoo species found across parts of Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Australasia. It is known for its distinctive mournful, descending whistle.
Where to spot
Distributed from Southeast Asia (e.g., Malaysia, Indonesia) through New Guinea and its associated islands, to parts of northern and eastern Australia. It inhabits a variety of wooded habitats, including rainforest edges, mangroves, and dense scrub.
How to spot
Listen carefully for its characteristic mournful, descending whistle, often repeated. Look for its relatively plain plumage as it perches, often hidden, in dense foliage within the mid-story or canopy.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in resident areas, but some populations undertake migratory movements. Vocal activity peaks during the breeding season, which varies seasonally by region.
