How to spot
Look for males performing subtle lek displays, though they are much less conspicuous than other manakins. Listen for their distinctive, buzzy calls. Patience is key to seeing the crest.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk when vocalizing. Look for lekking activity during breeding season.
