Spotted
The Black-capped Kingfisher is a large and brilliantly colored kingfisher found across Asia. It is easily recognized by its glossy black cap, bright red bill, white collar, and iridescent blue-green back.
Where to spot
Widespread from India and Sri Lanka east through Southeast Asia to China and Korea. Inhabits coastal mangroves, estuaries, and forested freshwater habitats.
How to spot
Look for its striking black cap and red bill perched conspicuously on branches over water or mudflats. Its loud, cackling calls, 'kek-kek-kek', are often heard. Watch for its powerful, direct flight over water.
When to spot
Resident in much of its range, but also migratory in northern parts, breeding in summer and wintering south. Active during daylight hours.
