Spotted
The Rusty Pitohui is a medium-sized, rufous-brown songbird native to New Guinea and nearby islands. It typically forages in the undergrowth and mid-story of tropical forests.
Where to spot
Found throughout lowland rainforests, monsoon forests, and secondary growth across New Guinea and some satellite islands.
How to spot
Look for its overall rusty-brown plumage, darker head, and robust build. Listen for its varied vocalizations, which include whistles, churring notes, and harsh scolding calls, often given from dense cover.
When to spot
Observable year-round. Most active during the cooler parts of the day, mornings and late afternoons, when it forages.
Like other pitohui species, the Rusty Pitohui can possess batrachotoxin, a neurotoxin found in its skin and feathers, acquired from the insects it eats, making it one of the few known poisonous birds.
