Spotted
The Rusty Ground Dove is a large, robust pigeon found on several islands within the Solomon Islands archipelago. Its plumage provides excellent camouflage within its forest habitat.
Where to spot
Native to several islands in the Solomon Islands, including Bougainville, Choiseul, Santa Isabel, and Guadalcanal, inhabiting primary and secondary forests.
How to spot
To observe this species, patiently scan the dense undergrowth and leaf litter in its forest habitat. It is often solitary or in pairs. Listen for subtle rustling sounds as it moves through the vegetation.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the day, particularly when foraging for fallen fruits and seeds on the forest floor.
Despite its relatively large size, the Rusty Ground Dove is often difficult to spot due to its preference for dense undergrowth and its rusty-brown coloration, which blends seamlessly with the forest floor.
