Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests along the Andes, from Venezuela south through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
How to spot
Look in the mid-story and subcanopy, often joining mixed-species flocks. The male's black and white barring and black crown are unmistakable. Listen for its clear, whistled calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
The male's intricate barring is unique among becards and provides effective camouflage among the dappled light of the forest interior.
